TechComm Bootcamp

Jumpstart your TechComm career
IMPORTANT:
This is a synchronous course with seven modules run in a cohort over seven weeks

Each module consists of a 75-minute recorded lecture, including downloadables for reference, and followed by a homework assignment for you to complete and upload on Sunday before the next module begins.

Each new module is opened up on Monday.

The schedule for the next cohort of TechComm Bootcamp is as follows:

Unit 1: Monday 30 June at 18h00 CEST
Unit 2: Monday 7 July at 18h00 CEST
Unit 3: Monday 14 July at 18h00 CEST
Unit 4: Monday 21 July at 18h00 CEST
Unit 5: Monday 28 July at 18h00 CEST
Unit 6: Monday 4 August at 18h00 CEST
Unit 7: Monday 11 August at 18h00 CEST

Three times during the course, the instructor offers office hours. These are live Zoom sessions where participants can ask questions, get help, or join in discussions with other students.In addition to office hours, an online forum allows participants to share ideas and ask questions.

    TechComm Bootcamp is the fastest, most efficient way to jump-start your career in technical communication. It covers key theory that you can immediately apply to your work, as well as giving you the skills you need to continue to learn and grow.

    Who is this course for?

    • Anyone working in the field without formal training.

    What will you learn?

    At the end of this course, you will be able to:

    • Understand the role of the technical communicator.
    • Identify how TC writing differs from other kinds of writing.
    • Correct common mistakes in writing.
    • Master the correct writing style for TC.
    • Identify and target your audience.
    • Recognize and treat hazards in documentation.
    • Learn and apply key theory for TC work.
    • Plan and manage a writing project
    • Write effective definitions and procedures.
    • Develop visual design skills.
    • Understand common TechComm deliverables.
    • Use a portfolio to present yourself to potential employers.

    How will you learn?

    Each element of theory is presented with hands-on exercises, real-world examples, and plenty of discussion. The course is sure to leave you feeling enthusiastic and well prepared to get started in the field.

    The course runs for 7 weeks with one module per week. Each new unit is opened on Monday morning. Each unit includes:
    • The recorded lecture (approximately 75 minutes long)
    • The accompanying handouts
    • A homework assignment (explanation, guidelines, and source materials)
    • Upload area for the assignment


    Homework will be due the following Sunday. The instructor reviews it, grades it, and returns it with feedback. General feedback and discussion of the homework is included at the beginning of the next unit.

    This live interaction makes this a more effective and engaging learning experience than purely self-paced courses.

    Leah Guren

    Expert in technical communication

    Leah Guren entered the field of technical communication in 1980. Her experience as a writer, editor, tech pubs manager, and consultant has allowed her to develop a variety of technical communication training programs. Leah trains new writers, as well as conducting seminars and in-house training for TCs of all levels, engineers, and managers. Her clients include many of the top high-tech and medical device companies internationally.


    Leah is best known for her ability to bring dry theory to life, illustrating rules with real-life examples and providing clear, practical guidelines which can be applied by writers of all levels and experience. Leah is a published author in the field and a regular speaker at international technical communication conferences.
